State-owned Romtelecom shares, between EUR 300-600 M

The best method of selling the state-owned package of Romtelecom shares, worth between EUR 300 million and EUR 600 million, would be through direct negotiations, Razvan Cotovelea, Minister for the Information Society, stated at ZF Mobilio ’14. Romtelecom is controlled by the Greek group OTE (54.01 percent) and the Romanian state (45.99 percent). The German group Deutsche Telekom is majority shareholder at OTE. The minister also noted that selling the state’s minority Romtelecom shares package is on the Government’s list of priorities.
According to the Minister for the Information Society, the privatization of the Romanian Post will be resumed after the European Commission has accepted the state’s request to reconvert the postal service operator’s debt into shares; offers may be submitted between June and August. A previous attempt to privatize the Romanian Post was made in the first half of last year, but no potential investors purchased the tender book before the May 28, 2013 deadline.
On a change of topic, Cotovelea announced that the Ministry for the Information Society has received a notification from Microsoft regarding a possible extension of technical support and security for Windows XP licenses used by the government. Approximately 35,000 computers used by government employees will be affected by Microsoft’s withdrawal of technical support, and the number could exceed 100,000 in the following 12 months.
