Prime Minister Victor Ponta will have to run for presidency this year unless PSD does not find “another formula,” said leader of social-democratic senators Ilie Sarbu yesterday for RFI. He says the decision on the party candidate will be made after the European Parliament elections. “…As you know, the prime minister said he would not have wanted this and does not want it. But certainly, unless we find another formula, we will have to resort to this, he is the party chairman, that was always the case and he is assuming this role. But what Antonescu and others said about the PM, chairman of our party, is not true, that he was looking forward to the alliance to break in order to be able to run for president. He did not want this and I know this better than any party member, he has not wanted it. He wanted to remain prime minister, things go well, despite the fact that Traian Basescu throws accusations of all sorts,” said Sarbu. Ponta recently said that he will run for this year’s presidential elections only if he does not fully trust that a “president who is part of USL plan” to change Basescu’s regime can win.
