Ciolos, supported by Basescu for a new mandate of European commissioner

President Traian Basescu announced, at the end of last week, his public support for the acting European commissioner Dacian Ciolos, for a new mandate. “I believe it would be a big mistake for Romania not to maintain its proposal for Ciolos (…) He is the commissioner that can do much good to many countries through the way he distributes the financial resources, for subsidies, direct payments, for various priority programmes,” the president said, quoted by evz.ro, adding that Agriculture is the commissariat that manages the biggest budget.
According to PSD sources, Ciolos tried recently to move closer to the ruling party, in view of obtaining the support of Premier Ponta. His chief of cabinet Sorin Moisa runs in the elections for the European Parliament on the lists of PSD-UNPR-PC, on the 10th position. Furthermore, Ciolos discreetly campaigned for the Minister of Agriculture Daniel Constantin whom he accompanied at various events in which there were discussions about European agricultural policies. The PSD list for the position of European commissioner features the acting MEP Corina Cretu, who would prefer an office allowing her to manage the interventions in case of natural disasters, the minister of Foreign Affairs, Titus Corlatean and the former chief of diplomacy, Mircea Geoana. Both Corlatean and Geoana allegedly target the office of high representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, now occupied by Baroness Catherine Ashton, adds the source.
