Geoana about new US ambassador nomination: A complicated process

PSD Senator Mircea Geoana who is also High Representative of the PM to promote strategic, economic and public diplomacy projects, tried to explain the reasons why the nomination of a new US ambassador to Romania has not been done yet, during a TV show on Tuesday night, Mediafax reports.
He said US President Barack Obama has already named three candidates for this position, but two of them have rejected the nomination as they noticed a blockage between republicans and democrats regarding the hearings.
“There are 35 states in the world at the moment without ambassadors from the mere reason that they have a complicated system. … There have been three names approved by President Obama for Romania, I believe: a lady who gave up, upon seeing how long the hearing schedule appointment in the Senate is lasting. She was a lady with a very good financial economic status. There was another person then who could not wait so much, either. …This is not a gesture of disrespect towards Romania, it is a disarticulated system at the Americans, a system I hope they will fix, because you can remain with almost a quarter of the world’s states without ambassadors,” Geoana told Realitatea TV channel.
Nevertheless, the social-democrat senator says that there will be an answer from the US this autumn regarding the problem of the ambassador to Romania and the visa waiving.
Geoana said that in case the law waiving visas for certain countries, including Romania, will not be adopted by August, there is the option of a special law for our country and Poland.
“We will make a new effort along with the Poles, meaning a decisive effort. Because in my opinion, we will find out in August whether the law of immigration reform will pass in the US, meaning the legalization of ten million citizens who are not US residents on American soil. We are prisoners, along with the Poles, vital countries for Western interest in this part of the world, prisoners of a complicated and controversial, extremely ideological law in the US … we are the prisoners of a huge political war in the US,”  said Geoana.
