Competition Council chief remains in office until new nominations are made

Bogdan Chiritoiu, president of the Competition Council, whose 5-year term of office ended Tuesday, will keep his office until a new chief is appointed, which is an ongoing process.The members of the Competition Council are appointed by the president, at the proposal of the government, for 5-year mandates that can be renewed only once. During Chiritoiu’s mandate, the Council initiated 104 probes and concluded 101, with the fines enforced between 2009 and 2013 amounting to the total sum of EUR 354 M (RON 1.5 bln). During the term of Chiritoiu, CC enforced the biggest competition-related fine in Romania. On 10 January 2012, the Council sanctioned the companies OMV Petrom, OMV Petrom Marketing, Rompetrol Downstream, ENI Romania, MOL Petroleum and Lukoil Romania with a total fine of EUR 880 M, accounting for 3 pc of their turnovers in 2010.
