Two European awards for fresco restoration projects at Dragomirna Church

The restoration project of 17th century frescos of Dragomirna Church in Suceava County got one of the six Grand Prix heritage conservation awards of Europa Nostra movement and the Public Choice Award on Monday night in Vienna, with more than 10,000 public votes. The award ceremony was held under the patronage of the President of Austria, Heinz Fischer, Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and tenor Placido Domingo, President of Europa Nostra. The jury was impressed by the high professionalism proven in the complex restoration and conservation project of this huge masterpiece with a wall surface of approximately 900 square meters. The conservation team included 50 professionals and students from several countries, led by a Romanian expert. The restoration workers observed and followed the original techniques, using natural traditional reversible materials; the original patina and the state of mind communicated by these unique 17th century frescoes were preserved, a European Commission release mentions.
