The 67th edition of the International Film Festival at Cannes (May 14-25, 2014) does not lack in major figures. Even if people are wondering if we will have inclement weather this year so that rain might turn into the unwanted star of the show, the atmosphere gets gradually warmer as movies are screened at Cannes.
For the first time there is a real competition between the movies in the official section (18 films) and those in the parallel section (50). The latter have the advantage of bringing to the festival undisputed stars. Nicole Kidman opened the series as interpret of the main character, Grace de Monaco, in the movie with the same name by Olivier Dahan, a movie that stirred some controversy regarding the authenticity. Nicole herself said that was a piece of fiction, which should be viewed accordingly.
Lambert Wilson will be Master of Ceremonies after this role went to Audrey Tautou in 2013.
The award ceremony will be on Saturday (May 24) and for the first time the last screening, on the following Sunday, will be devoted to the movie winning Palme d’Or. For the awards evening, an announcement revealed over the past few days name American filmmaker and actor Quentin Tarantino as guest. He will present a Spaghetti Western, the Italian specialty of the genre, “A Fistful of Dollars (1964) by Sergio Leone, marking half a century since its premiere. Homage will be paid to Tarantino himself by screening one of his reference movies, Pulp Fiction, that won Palme d’Or.
Huge banners posted everywhere in the cities show international stars from Martin Scorsese to Natalie Portman. The festival poster, visible everywhere, represents Marcello Mastroianni in “Eight and a Half” by Federico Fellini. A string of American superstars (Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger), invited over the years at Cannes, are expected on occasion of launching the super-production The Expendables 3.
