Liberal leader Crin Antonescu aims at strengthening strategic partnership with US

Opposition National Liberal Party (PNL) Chairman Crin Antonescu in Washington on Wednesday met Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Trade Policy and Programs Robert Manogue, in which context he pleaded for increasing the economic dimension of the bilateral strategic partnership.
‘One of my objectives, which I will support either as leader of the largest Opposition party or as Romania’s President, is to strengthen the strategic partnership with the United States, especially in terms of economic cooperation. We have an excellent military, political cooperation, we must also strengthen the economic cooperation. For this, Romania’s President’s duty is to make sure the Romanian state institutions consolidate an investment encouraging environment. We must show Romania is an investment open and welcoming country. More transparency in the decision-making process, less emergency ordinances, more consultations with the business environment when implementing measures concerning Romanian and foreign companies [are needed]. Investors want more predictability and I believe it is a legit requirement,’ Crin Antonescu underscored, according to a PNL release remitted to Agerpres on Wednesday.
The PNL leader said he saw a solid connection between the investment-favourable environment and the rule of law.
‘We need strong institutions, fighting against corruption, to show investors that the rule of law is functioning,’ the PNL Chairman showed.
In the discussion held at the US Department of State, the Liberal leader presented his vision on common interest topics, having granted a special attention to the one concerning the trans-Atlantic partnership for trade and investments, still under negotiation between the US and the EU, according to the cited source. According to the release, the creation of a single trade area from Hawaii to the Black Sea represents the most ambitious project the European Union and the United States of America commit to. Moreover, the release shows that in one year’s time there may be a single trade area which can lead to an EU and US economy growth estimated between 100 and 120 billion dollars for each and millions of jobs on the two shores of the Atlantic.
‘Because in Romania this agreement and its possible effects are still too little known, Crin Antonescu announced that PNL planned to organise a debate on this topic, most likely in September, an event meant to bring into focus representatives of the diplomatic environment, of Romanian and US companies and of the political area, in order to learn their opinions on such an important topic, for the Romanian citizens, included,’ the release points out.
