Dismissal of Romanian Post manager proves hard to set in motion

The Ministry for the Information Society is seeking legal courses of action to relieve Ion Smeeianu of his duties and thus eliminate all abusive contractual clauses pertaining to compensatory wages.

Razvan Cotovelea, Minister for the Information Society, stated yesterday that the intends to relieve Ion Smeeianu (photo), General Manager of the Romanian Post, of his duties and pointed out that ministry representatives are currently seeking the appropriate course of action for his dismissal.
“We don’t think it’s fair for the Post to accept these clauses… A contractual clause for a certain executive director stipulated – past tense because it no longer exists – that regardless of his actions, like stealing for instance, he would go home with 20 indemnities when his individual labor contract expired, which we believe is unacceptable… These contracts were signed by the current general manager of the Romanian Post, Ion Smeeianu. The necessary steps are being taken in this respect (editor’s note – towards Smeeianu’s dismissal). Yes, of course, there is a possibility for Smeeianu to be removed from the company’s board,” Razvan Cotovelea said on the occasion of Communication Day. Smeeianu took over as manager of the Romanian Post in May 2012.
Upon request from Minister Razvan Cotovelea, the entire Romanian Post management team has agreed to relinquish all individual labor contract clauses pertaining to compensatory wages in the event of shutdown of company activities, the Ministry for the Information Society (MIS) announced Monday.
Increase in company revenue – prerequisite for wage increase
“The fiscal frame allowing us to increase the wages of Romanian Post employees is very narrow, but we hope to implement a real gradual increase of RON 80 to RON 120,” Cotovelea said further. He also mentioned that an overall assessment should be carried out in collaboration with trade unionists because at present there are not sufficient resources to immediately raise the wages of 27,000 Romanian Post employees.
“Due to last year’s efforts to lay off 4,500 employees and a number of voluntary resignations, the Romanian Post reported an operating profit. If we decide to intervene now and raise wages for 27,000 people without taking into account the company’s financial health, the company will become insolvent,” Cotovelea explained.
Late last week, the MIS asked the Prime Minister’s Control Body to verify the legal grounds by which Rosita Madalina Alexe, the Romanian Post’s former judicial director, is to receive 30 compensatory wages amounting to approx. EUR 60,000. Data provided by the Romanian Post show Rosita Madalina Alexe was coopted for the company’s management team in 2012. According to her personal financial statement, Alexe has earned a total of RON 106,662 in 2013 as Departmental Head of the postal service operator’s Legal Division, the equivalent of a monthly wage of around RON 8,900. The MIS owns 75 percent of Romanian Post shares.
Through recent protests, postal trade unionists have demanded fixed higher wages for all employees equal to the inflation rate, as of June 1, 2014.
