Bucharest Airports have new management

Sorinel Ciobanu, former managing director of the Baneasa and Otopeni airports and previously under investigation by DNA on suspicion of abuse of office, has been appointed interim general manager of the Bucharest Airports National Company (CNAB), the institution which administers the capital city’s terminals, Mediafax informs. The decision was made Friday in the first meeting of the new Board of Directors of Bucharest Airports. The new members of the board also appointed Dan Andrei, former aviation managing director for the Ministry of Transport, chairman of the board, a company press release notes.
On Thursday, the Ministry of Transport dismissed the Bucharest Airports board members and appointed an interim BD, according to Proprietatea Fund, a minority shareholder in the company. The same source pointed out “there is evidence” that the General Shareholders’ Assembly was organized in violation of the legal provisions in effect.
The new Board of Directors consists of the following Ministry of Transport representatives: Dan Andrei, Iulius Plaveti (former president of ANRE), Gabriel Dumitrascu (managing director of the Privatization Division in the Energy Department), Dragos Brezeanu, Gheorghe Catalin Radu (managing director of the Civil Aviation and Airspace Department in the Ministry of Transport), and Adrian Toma, one of the leaders of the Bucharest Airports union.
The BD position previously occupied by the Proprietatea Fund was left vacant after representatives of the minority shareholder failed to attend the General Shareholders’ Assembly, sources familiar with the details have stated.
The board members who have been replaced are Radu Merica (chairman of the board), Liviu Radu (general manager), Marius Bodea, Bogdan Gaurean, and Adrian Cighi. Sorinel Ciobanu has twenty years of experience in the field of aviation, ten of which he has spent working for the Otopeni International Airport. In 2008, Ciobanu was sued by DNA prosecutors along with five other persons on suspicion that during his term as managing director of the Baneasa Airport he had approved a land property exchange between the Bucharest Baneasa National Airport National Company (SN AIBB) and a natural person, resulting in damages of over four million euros. In 2010, Ciobanu was appointed general manager of Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport which had not been built yet.
Gabriel Dumitrascu, Tarom’s new chairman of the board
Last Thursday, Gabriel Dumitrascu, head of the Privatization Division in the Energy Department and manager of Bucharest Airports, was elected chairman of the Board of Directors at Tarom, a position previously held by Dante Stein. Dumitrascu had become a member of the board in early May. Four out of Tarom’s six members of the board were replaced following the General Shareholders’ Assembly, with the exception of Dante Stein, former counselor to PM Ponta, and Razvan Filipescu, president of the National Tourism Authority.
