Boxing: Steluta Duta is European champion, Marilena Radu wins silver

Romania’s Steluta Duta won the European title on Saturday, defeating Bulgaria’s Sevda Asenova in the final of the 48-kilogram category at the European Boxing Championships in Bucharest. Steluta Duta had defeated Germany’s Anne Marie Stark in the semifinals, as well as Belarus’s Volha Luscik and Russia’s Svetlana Gnevanova in previous rounds.
Romania’s Marinela Radu lost on Saturday the final of the 81-kilogram category at the European Women’s Boxing Championships, to Ukraine’s Lilia Durnieva. Marinela Radu had defeated Croatia’s Anamarija Marsiuc in the semifinals and Netherlands’s Maxine Yvonne Koelemeij in the previous round.
The five Romanian athletes that won medals and their coaches toured Bucharest in a limousine rented by the Romanian Boxing Federation on Monday. The boxers received flowers and celebrated with champagne the results obtained at the competition hosted by Bucharest’s Polyvalent Hall. The limousine left from the Lia Manoliu National Sport Center’s Sports Hotel and stopped at the Palace of Parliament where the athletes posed with the Romanian flag.  Romania won five medals at the European Championships that ended on Saturday: a gold medal (Steluta Duta), a silver medal (Marilena Florina Radu) and three bronze medals (Simona Sitar, Cristina Stancu, Luminita Turcin).
