PM Ponta: On the left side, only Oprescu and I can run for president

PSD leader Victor Ponta affirmed in an interview with Romania TV that the only candidates of the Social-Democratic Union (USD) for the presidential elections can be himself or the mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu. According to Ponta, the list of names presented before the European elections as possible presidential candidates was substantially reduced because Mugur Isarescu wants a new mandate as governor of BNR, while the impossibility of restoring the Social-Liberal Union (USL) makes that PSD cannot support Calin Popescu Tariceanu even in the first round.
Asked about the possibility that he runs for president, Ponta answered that the possibility of “eating the calf in the cow’s belly” was evoked both in 2004 and 2009, and it will not be the case in 2014, when everybody must do his job and only then it will be evident “whether the place is available or not.” He mentioned that any discussion about the candidate of PSD in the presidential elections remains open until September. According to him, the role of Romania’s future president is to generate national institutional profits based on personal relations.
Ponta, the most suitable candidate?
The former leader of PSD, Mircea Geoana talked Monday evening on TV about the possible candidacy for the presidential elections of 2014, assuring that he will not allow his party to nominate an outsider. “Any candidacy from outside the party will be countered by my candidacy, in the internal elections,” the ex-leader of PSD told the “Adevarul” newspaper.
Senate Speaker Calin Popescu Tariceanu said yesterday that he might consider running for the Presidency of Romania as an independent, but it is too early for him to pronounce over this idea.
PSD executive president Liviu Dragnea mentioned that Victor Ponta “wins” in all the opinion polls made for the European elections, in terms of confidence and score in the second round of the presidential elections. Asked if he demanded the social-democrats to support him in gaining the presidency of PSD or the office of premier after the presidential elections, Dragnea answered: “No, because now we have a party president and a prime minister.”
Constanta mayor Radu Mazare considers both Victor Ponta and Sorin Oprescu very good variants of presidential candidates for USD.
Adrian Sarbu-Ponta dispute
“I met Mr. Ponta on several occasions, not at my request. The statement made in the interview served by Romania TV is pure personal fantasy. His political career is not the object of my activities. (…) Victor Ponta is neither the first, nor the last Romanian politician which, once in power, confuses the media with a propaganda Disneyland,” said Adrian Sarbu, former owner of the MediaPro group. The reaction comes after the premier said in the interview with Romania TV that Adrian Sarbu told him he made all the presidents and if he wants he will make him too. And I told him that no, thanks, I would prefer he pays his taxes. Since then, we are in very cold relations,” Ponta explained.
