Simona Halep officially on 3rd place in WTA rankings after Roland Garros final

Roland Garros finalist Simona Halep is now 3rd in the WTA rankings published on Monday, ranking behind America’s Serena Williams and China’s Na Li, Mediafax informs. With a total of 6,435 points, Romania’s Halep surpassed Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska (4th place, 5,990 pts). Halep is now the best-ranked Romanian player. Sorana Cirstea dropped two places and is now 28th, with 1,680 points, while Monica Niculescu climbed from 76th to 66th place and totals 840 points.
Halep stated on Sunday, on her return to Romania, that she thanks all Romanians who rooted for her in the final she lost to Maria Sharapova. “I am much more nervous now than I was before the final. It’s a special moment for me and I thank you for coming here. I thank the Romanians that rooted for me in Paris and all the people that rooted for me in front of their TV sets. I am glad I obtained this performance for me and for Romania. I am happy I am from Romania,” Halep said. The Roland Garros finalist said she is not sad despite losing to Maria Sharapova.
Simona Halep lost the final of the Roland Garros Grand Slam tournament on Saturday, being defeated by Russia’s Maria Sharapova (8th WTA and top seed 7), 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4.
Simona Halep will be Romanian tourism ambassador, Prime Minister Victor Ponta announced. “Where necessary we will hike the prize money, in other places we will do other things, because it’s difficult to tell Simona, who won almost one million, that you will hike her prize money, but you can do other things. She will be Romanian tourism ambassador,” Ponta said on Romania TV.
Romania’s Ioana Ducu, Ioana Loredana Rosca win Roland Garros Girls’ Doubles title
The Romanian pair made up of Ioana Ducu and Ioana Loredana Rosca on Saturday won the girls’ doubles event of the Roland Garros tournament, after defeating the pair Catherine Cartan Bellis (US) /Marketa Vondrousova (the Czech Republic) 6-1, 5-7, 11-9 in the final.
The last victory at this tournament was achieved by Simona Halep in girls’ singles event in 2008 when she defeated the Romanian tennis player Elena Bogdan.
