George Maior said that SRI has “very good knowledge and outstanding competences” about Russian espionage in Romania.
The chief of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), George Cristian Maior, presented yesterday the report of the service before the Joint Permanent Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate for exerting the Parliament’s control on the activity of SRI. Before the committee, Maior spoke about the “corruption in administration and justice,” “the problem of terrorism, still seriously in the attention of the service” and “the stringent problem of tax evasion.” Other topics were about cyber-security, which “starts increasingly affecting the security of stat6es, including Romania” and “the regional offensiveness of Russia,” he added, quoted by HotNews.ro.
“I hope the 9,000 notes sent to central and local authorities during 2013 have contributed to diminishing the risks and threats Romania was confronted with. Generally, they were appreciated by the Presidency as well as by the Executive, as valuable information for the decisions taken by them during last year,” the SRI Chief said, according to Agerpres.
Asked about the Russian espionage in Romania, George Maior said that SRI has “very good knowledge and outstanding competences with this regard”. “It is not a problem that cannot be professionally approached by the service,” he emphasised.
In a different move, Maior said that the draft law on the compulsory recording and storing the identification data of prepaid phone card users is “perfectly in concordance” with human rights and has as objective ensuring the cyber-security of Romania. The statement of the SRI Chief comes in the context when he was asked to comment the provisions regarding the compulsoriness of storing on 6 months the data of the provider of free Wi-Fi services, provided by this draft law.
SRI activity report on 2013, approved in unanimity
The activity report of SRI for 2013 was adopted in unanimity by the parliamentary committee for the control of the activity of SRI, the chairman of the committee, Georgian Pop announced. According to Pop, no incident of national security took place last year on Romanian territory. He added that this is explained through the prevention work of SRI and the information sent by SRI to legal beneficiaries. “We had a hearing of the SRI leadership that was extremely productive. We focused the debate on two topics: first we debated the activity report of SRI for 2013, and second we analysed the evolution in 2014 of the main phenomena from the sphere of national security,” Georgian Pop stated.
