Ponta wants to participate to EC meeting, asks for Basescu’s mandate

nounced on Saturday that he asked President Traian Basescu the mandate to represent Romania at the meeting of the European Council scheduled for next week and that he is still to get an answer from the president. “I have officially asked the mandate to go there. On July 26, there will be a council devoted exclusively to the program of the future European Commission, on the upcoming five years, and then it is normal to consider that, if we talk about the upcoming five-year span, I should participate,” Ponta said for Antena 3.
Ponta, who was on Saturday in Paris for the informal meeting on the future European Commission organized by the French President, said that Romania asks that the future EC program should adopt clear rules to support economic growth and create jobs, but also rules of non-discrimination for Romanian citizens, as well as an important portfolio of European commissioner for Romania, if Agriculture cannot be preserved.

After attending the informal meeting in Paris of Social-Democratic heads of government from EU member states, Prime Minister Victor Ponta also said France’s president and prime minister assured him that the aggressors of a Romanian young man, who left him fighting for his life, will be punished. ‘I once again discussed with Prime Minister Manuel Valls and President Francois Hollande what has recently happened in the case of the Romanian young man that was lynched pure and simple, and I said that I very much appreciate their very clear positions. I am convinced that they will take all the measures to catch the aggressors and punish them. I am trustful and they assured me that the aggressors will be punished,’ Ponta told Antena 3 private broadcaster in an interview. ‘I also discussed Romania’s accession to the Schengen area. Here I mean not just France, but two other countries – Germany and the Netherlands as well – and I am convinced that we can have as soon as possible good result. The problem is the political crisis at our neighbours,’ said Ponta.
