Orban, PNL: Merger congress on July 26 most likely

Liberal vice-chairman also announced that PNL survey for president candidate will be ready in 7 to 10 days.

PNL Vice-president Ludovic Orban said on Monday that the joint merger congress PNL and PDL might take place on July 26, as the joint documents should be concluded by July 15, saying that the PNL survey to establish the liberal candidate for presidential elections should be concluded in 7 to 10 days. “As for the merger schedule, the same deadlines were preserved, basically until July 15 the papers will be ready, namely the status project, the political program project, the country project and the merger protocol between the two political parties, as the two structures of the two political parties will ratify these documents, I mean the Extraordinary National Convention of PDL and the PNL Congress,” said Orban.
He said that July 26 might be the day of the united congress between PDL and PNL for the merger. The PNL vice-chairman also said that the survey ordered by the liberals will “start on the field” today, Tuesday at the latest, and based on the sociological research, the Standing Delegation will decide then the liberals’ candidate for presidential elections, to run into the common analysis with the PDL candidate. Orban said that the PNL survey will last between 7 and 10 days, reasserting that the joint candidate of PNL and PDL for presidential elections will be named by August 1. On the other hand, ex-PNL President Crin Antonescu had proposed that PNL should give up the survey and go instead for a political decision in the Permanent Delegation. PNL leadership declined his proposal.
In his turn, National leader of the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) Vasile Blaga (photo) on Monday said he is optimistic about the future of the PDL and the National Liberal Party (PNL), adding that in the days ahead a date for the conventions of the two parties’ congresses will be set to discuss the merger of the two parties. ‘We are in full swing of a PDL-PNL merger and I am looking forward. Probably today, tomorrow at the latest, the date for the conventions of the congresses will be set,’ Blaga said before a meeting of the PDL National Standing Bureau.
PDL sources quoted by Realitatea.net said that Blaga asked for his party members a trenchant position regarding the merger, saying PDL has to choose between merger with PNL and his resignation from PDL’s helm. “Either we proceed with the merger, or I won’t come back to Traian Basescu. Everything that Traian Basescu touches will wither like a beanstalk”, Blaga told Democrat-Liberals.
