CAB: Romeo Stavrache to remain under preventive arrest

Suspended mayor of Bacau Romeo Stavrache sued for five cases of corruption will remain under preventive arrest after Bacau Court of Appeal allowed yesterday the request made by the anti-corruption prosecutors for the arrest extension by further 30 days, reports Mediafax. Romeo Stavrache was summoned to court on Friday under the accusation of getting bribes from four businessmen for several contracts, one of these men being Costel Casuneanu, who allegedly gave him RON 100,000 in exchange for the release of a city-planning certificate. The National Anti-Corruption Directorate ordered the charge of Romeo Stavrache for five felonies of getting bribes between 2008 and 2011, as the total amount received by the Bacau mayor would exceed RON 2.3 million. In the same case, businessmen Costel Casuneanu, Liviu Vasile Cenusa and Liviu Goian were also sued, along with director of the Agency of Regional Development North-East Constantin Apostol. According to the DNA prosecutors, Romeo Stavrache asked and received, either directly or through the other culprits, several sums of money from the four businessmen.
