MAE hails completion of legal framework for implementing Romanian-US Agreement on anti-missile system

The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) on Tuesday hailed the completion of the legal framework for implementing the Agreement between Romania and the US on deploying the US defence system against ballistic missiles in Romania.
‘MAE hails the signing in Bucharest on Tuesday by the Co-Chairmen of the Joint Romanian-US Committee of the last three Implementing Arrangements of the Agreement between Romania and the United States of America on the deployment of the United States defence system against ballistic missiles in Romania, which came into force on December 23, 2011. The three documents regulate the reception of up-to-date information referring to anti-missile defence operations, aspects related to environment protection, as well as the establishment of a connection officer of Romania within United States European Command,’ the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry points out in a release remitted to AGERPRES on Tuesday.
The cited source adds that MAE voices its satisfaction with the fast pace of the demarches for the implementation of the Agreement, which allowed the completion of the necessary legal framework before the initial deadline.
‘This aspect efficiently enables putting into operation the anti-missile facility within the military base of Deveselu sometime in 2015. The Foreign Affairs Ministry reiterates the exclusively defensive nature of the anti-missile system and its use in accordance with the provisions of the United Nations Charter, such as the provisions of the Agreement of 2011 unequivocally show,’ MAE underscores, in the release remitted to AGERPRES on Tuesday.
According to MAE, Romania’s and the US’s firm commitment for implementing the Second Stage of the System in Europe of US’s defence system against ballistic missiles, conducted in a European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA), reflects the consistency of the two countries for developing the cooperation for Romania’s and US’s security consolidation, an integrating part of the Romanian-US strategic partnership, as well as the collective security of the North-Atlantic Alliance.
