Former President Iliescu: I met Patriciu when he represented group of young PNL leaders

Former President of Romanian Ion Iliescu stated, on Tuesday, that he met the late Dinu Patriciu immediately after the Revolution, in the period before the elections of May 1990, when he, together with Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, represented a group of young National Liberal Party (PNL) leaders, that accompanied the ‘older generation’ formed by Radu Campeanu and Mircea Ionescu Quintus.

Iliescu described Patriciu as ‘a civilized man, a balanced man, a man with an active position, a man of dialogue’.

‘Surely, we were on different political positions, they represented a party, I was representing the CFSN, the National Salvation Front, but the CPUN (e.n. – The National Union Provisional Council) itself was the expression of this wish for dialogue, for creating a climate in which to start from this observation of an objective reality of life: diversity, diversity of opinions expressed by political parties. And I believe that the CPUN was, from this point of view, in the entire period before the May elections, the proper framework in which this diversity of opinions be expressed. It was a beneficial activity to ensure the stability of the country in that period’, Iliescu told private broadcaster Digi 24.

The former president also noted that, during meetings with representatives of political parties, he had continued to see Dinu Patriciu after the May 2009 elections, given that he was one of the most appreciated Liberal leaders.

‘He was one of the active people, one of the persons that stood out in those days (e.n. – after the Revolution). After that, I know that he entered business. From that period on, we had weaker contacts (…)’, said the former president.

Businessman Dinu Patriciu died on Tuesday, in London, following a pulmonary infection for which he was hospitalized in the past days. In December 2012 he underwent a liver transplant procedure
