FM Corlatean emphasizes privileged nature of Strategic Partnership relations with United Kingdom

Minister of Foreign Affairs Titus Corlatean has received on Wednesday the new ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Romania, Paul Brummell, on the occasion of the presentation of accreditation letters; he used this opportunity to emphasize the ‘privileged nature’ of the partnership relation that Romania has with this country within the Strategic Partnership.

According to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remitted to AGERPRES, the minister was referring to the partnership that was relaunched in June 2011 and developed especially on the dimensions of security and military cooperation in theatres of operations, internal affairs and crime prevention, and judiciary cooperation.

‘Both parties expressed their availability to consolidate the bilateral political dialogue through the establishment of a periodic consultation mechanism, on ministerial and expert levels. Furthermore, the two speakers have underlined the good cooperation in the economic domain, confirmed by an continuously ascending dynamic of commercial trade in past years, 2013 bearing witness to a record increase of commercial bilateral trade, worth over 3 billion euro. The sides have agreed upon continuously encouraging and promoting economic cooperation, as well as utilizing the investment potential existent in the two countries through promotion of business opportunities in different domains’, the quoted release shows.

The discussions also approached topics of the situation in the eastern neighbourhood. In this context, the head of Romanian diplomacy reiterated the necessity to respect the territorial integrity and the independence of Ukraine, in conformity with international regulation, as well as the need for solid support from the EU, coordinated with the Euro-Atlantic partners, for the stabilization and reform processes of Ukraine.

‘As regards the Republic of Moldova, Minister Titus Corlatean has reiterated the priority interest Romania attaches to the European path of this country. He reminded of the necessity for real support to be granted to the Chisinau authorities, given the regional context and the perspective of the coming legislative elections in the Republic of Moldova’, the quoted source mentions.

The two officials also approached other subjects on the international agenda, such as the situation in the Gaza Strip and Iraq, and the coming NATO summit in Great Britain. In this context the importance of reconfirming the solidity of the transatlantic relationship for adequate managing of security risks associated with the new geo-strategic context was emphasized.
