In a message for the 70th anniversary of the August 23, 1944 historic event, national leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Klaus Johannis says King Mihai is truly a hero.
Johannis and PNL are extending in the message ‘the most distinguished homages and wonderful thoughts to His Majesty King Mihai I of Romania.’
‘It is 70 years this year since the historic event of August 23, 1944, which author was undoubtedly His Majesty, King Mihai I of Romania. It has befallen to me the honouring mission to thank His Majesty on behalf of the National Liberal Party (PNL) for his brave action that led in the end to the victory of the Allies. The historic event that witnessed Romania turning against the Nazis, thus shortening WWII by at least six months and avoiding incommensurable territorial losses as well as human casualties in Romania and all around Europe, remains probably the most important event in Romania’s recent history,’ reads the message issued on Friday.
Johannis also says that seven decades later historians wisely and comprehensively highlight the personal virtues displayed by King Mihai I on that crucial day to Romania’s destiny, arguing that that was a saving moment for the future of the Romanian nation.
