Municipality to sue hydro power company Hidroelectrica for flood damages

The mayor of Brezoi, Valcea county (north-west of the capital) has announced he is suing hydro power company Hidroelectrica for the defective management of the reservoirs during the major floods three weeks ago and is asking the company to pay for the damages sustained by the town as a result.

Said Robert Schell: ‘I’ve been speaking for three weeks and nobody has been listening to me, I’ve been speaking of the great error having occurred in the case of Bradisor dam. It is outrageous that a Code Red alert of rains be announced and the company should leave the reservoir full of water. Nobody was able to make the decision to fully empty the reservoirs a few days before the Code was in place. The Code alert was issued for the Lotru river, it is an arranged riverbed and all the damages inflicted to Brezoi or Malaia could have been avoided if the reservoir had been emptied. It didn’t happen and during those formidable days, dams and houses were effectively swept away by the swollen waters and the town of Brezoi was on alert of being evacuated. Somebody should pay for this, that is why we will sue Hidroelectrica’, the mayor told Agerpres.
