Foreign Affairs Minister Titus Corlatean on Monday said that Ukraine must decide on its own its interior organisation formula and in relation to its European future, while reiterating the ‘constant’ request the European Union and NATO addressed to Russia to stop any form of political and military support for separatists.
When asked about Romania’s position concerning a possible federalisation of Ukraine, Corlateanreminded that the federalisation-linked discussions had been launched by the Russian Federation.
‘Romania believes that Ukraine itself and no one else must decide on its internal organisation formula. It may be a greater decentralisation, there can be several competences granted to the local, regional authorities, but it is in the competency of the domestic political forces of Ukraine, through political dialogue, included, to find the solution. For this, everything that means military conflict in the eastern region must be stopped. Hence, the constant request of Romania’s European and Euro-Atlantic partners addressed to the Russian Federation: to immediately stop any form of military and political support for the separatists, because this condition will allow the true launching of the domestic political process. Furthermore, we don’t believe that suggestions from the exterior or requests, positions from the exterior, federalisations would help this political process. The political process is related to Ukraine’s internal sovereignty,’ Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Titus Corlatean said on Monday.
