PM Ponta: I’d rather resign as president than designate Basescu prime minister

Prime Minister Victor Ponta told Romania TV news channel late on Monday he will rather resign as head of state, if put in the position to designate Traian Basescu as prime minister, adding that such a model of prime minister would be a ‘nightmare’ for Romania.

‘Mr. Basescu will not become [prime minister] because I should designate him. If he has fifty percent plus one, I will rather resign as president than designate Traian Basescu. … So far I have held positions from which I have tried to do as many good things as possible, but I do not believe I have to occupy a position my entire life. One occupies a position as long as one is able to take action according to his/her will. I think that a prime minister with the mentality and thinking of Mr. Basescu is a nightmare, a catastrophe for Romania and I myself will never sign such appointment,’ Ponta said when asked if he were elected president, he would cooperate with Traian Basescu as prime minister.
