UNPR collects 1 million signatures for Ponta’s candidacy

Deputy Prime Minister Gabriel Oprea, the president of the National Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR), has stated on Saturday that UNPR has collected one million signatures in support of Premier Victor Ponta’s  (photo) presidential candidacy, stating at the same time that Premier Ponta is the only candidate that UNPR will back in the presidential race.
“UNPR has a political alliance with PSD until 2020, we are left-wing parties and we consider that the strategic goal of this alliance is for Victor Ponta to win the Presidency,” Oprea said.
In other developments, Ponta was present at the Social-Democrat Youth Summer School in Constanta, asking the members of the Social Democrat Youth (TSD) to stand alongside him in the 73 days left until the presidential runoff. He said that a war pitting Romanians against Romanians has been waged in the last ten years, entire social categories being pitted one against the other. “In 2004 and 2009 we talked only about the bad. Basescu is bad, he is a liar, but we have to fight against PSD, against Nastase. It was a choice between an evil and a worse evil. I want you to help me in the next 73 days to say that we have a battle to wage for something good,” the Premier said. Ponta also told the young PSD members that he sometimes envies Radu Mazare for his convertible cars, clubs and bodyguards, pointing out however that Mazare told him he does not envy him and does not want to be in his shoes.
Ponta also touched upon the issue of Romania’s European commissioner. He pointed out that Romania has big chances of obtaining an important portfolio provided the attacks from inside the country cease, deeming that the Head of State cannot help the Government in what concerns the negotiations over the commissioner’s portfolio allocated to Romania, claiming that “nobody listens to him in Brussels.” In what concerns the intention of PDL’s First Vice President Anca Boagiu to file a criminal complaint against him over the nomination of the European commissioner, Ponta stated that he does not know whether she has the courage to get anywhere near the Prosecutor’s Office out of fear of being detained there.
