Mayor Gheorghe Stefan, prosecuted by DNA on Giga TV file

Criminal charges were filed by the DNA against the Mayor of Piatra Neamt, Gheorghe ?tefan, based on the case of the latter’s interventions regarding TV station Giga TV’s broadcast license, legal sources stated for Mediafax.
Gheorghe Stefan visited the headquarters of the National Anticorruption Department (DNA) yesterday. While entering the building, he refused to confess the reason of his presence in front of prosecutors.
Legal sources declared for Mediafax that Gheorghe Stefan had been invited to DNA in order to be notified that he had been accused of deeds of corruption in the file of interventions for the broadcast permission of the station GIGA TV.
DNA informed later in the day that Stefan was prosecuted because he would have asked PSD MP Viorel Hrebenciuc to convince CNA head Laura Georgescu to give Giga TV‘s broadcast licence back. Giga TV is controlled by Gheorghe Stefan.
Stefan’s lawyer, Catalin Dancu said yesterday that it is not his client who is the main suspect in this file and that DNA will extend investigations to some other persons, possible politicians and CNA employees.
The same file resulted in legal charges against CNA President Laura Georgescu, as well as Viorel Hrebenciuc and Narcisa Iorga.
A change in the poll concerning Giga TV’s broadcast license by three CNA members was unjustly applied as a result of Laura Georgescu’s improper professional conduct, DNA prosecutors say, who therefore accuse the head of CNA by abuse of office.
Viorel Hrebenciuc is under criminal charges because, investigators say, he allegedly interfered to influence CNA members, so that the institution would change its position regarding the decision to terminate the broadcast license of Giga TV, supported by the Mayor of Piatra Neamt, Gheorghe Stefan.
Narcisa Iorga is presently prosecuted by the DNA for having suggested the Mayor of Piatra Neamt how he could regain the broadcast license and whom to contact in this matter, naming Deputy Viorel Hrebenciuc.
Anticorruption prosecutors claim that Viorel Hrebenciuc, a Deputy and a member of the PSD National Executive Committee, directly intervened at the request of Gheorghe Stefan and started a series of actions in order to persuade CNA officers to revisit the institution’s decision regarding the cancelling of Giga TV’s broadcast license.
„During these actions, Viorel Hrebenciuc has misused his influence and authority as a member of the top departments of the party he’s a member of”, DNA officers pointed out.
