Ponta is officially a presidential candidate

Premier Victor Ponta is PSD’s official presidential candidate, after the party’s Extraordinary Congress unanimously validated his candidacy on Friday in Alba Iulia.
Thus, out of 414,917 party members consulted, 414,667 voted in favor, 68 voted against and 182 abstained. The results were read at the Extraordinary Congress by PSD Executive President Liviu Dragnea, after the vice president of each regional branch presented by videoconference the results of the voting that took place in each county branch. Also on Friday, the PSD Bucharest party branch met at Romexpo and approved the resolution adopted by the party’s extended National Council on July 29 in Craiova, a resolution through which the party commits to backing the candidacy of PSD President Victor Ponta in the presidential elections. “PSD’s extended National Council takes note of PSD President Victor Ponta’s decision of running for the office of Romanian President. PSD’s branches on all levels back his candidacy and take the commitment of engaging in all actions of organizing and mobilizing party members in order to win the presidential elections,” the resolution adopted at the National Council meeting in Craiova and voted at PSD Bucharest’s Conference shows, Mediafax informs. According to the document, Victor Ponta’s victory in the presidential elections “will mark the end of an abusive political regime.”
“The election of Victor Ponta for the office of Romanian President ensures the consolidation of the good reforms made by the current government for economic recovery, job creation and the improvement of living standards,” the resolution reads.
PSD Bucharest President and Senator Ecaterina Andronescu told the Social Democrats that in the following period they will have to mobilize in order to secure for Premier Victor Ponta a lead in confidence in the first round of elections. Addressing the Social Democrats that attended the Extraordinary Congress in Alba Iulia, Premier Victor Ponta pointed out that this is the last Congress in which he is their party president and that he wants to be invited at the PSD Congress in February 2015 as President of Romania.
“I also have a tinge of nostalgia thinking that this is the last Congress in which I am your president. (…),” Ponta said, being quoted by Mediafax.
He pointed out that his mandate as PSD President will be over on November 16, the date of the presidential runoff, and he thanked all of his Social Democrat colleagues for having the confidence of voting for a 37-year-old president. “I want to say, whatever my road will be, that I will always be proud of being a Social Democrat, that I was and still am – and will be a bit – president of the party that had Ion Iliescu, Adrian Nastase and Mircea Geoana as presidents and I thank all for this,” Ponta said.
Victor Ponta will launch his presidential candidacy on September 20, the date of his birthday, the event being scheduled to take place in Bucharest, on the National Arena, with tens of thousands of people attending.
