The National Statistics Institute has announced that the total number of non-resident tourists stood at 840,000 in Q1 this year, and they spent a total of RON 2,203.1 M.
The main reasons for which non-resident tourists came to Romania were: business, congress meetings, conferences, classes, fairs and exhibitions (62.1 per cent of the total number of non-resident tourists, the sums they spent representing 69.4 per cent of the total).
The second most important reason consisted of private travels (37.9 per cent of the total number of non-resident tourists, the sums they spent representing 30.6 per cent of the total). Private travels include holiday travels, shopping, cultural and sports events, visiting friends and relatives, medical treatment, religion, transit and other activities.
Of the total money spent for business, the biggest share is represented by money spent on lodging (50.7 per cent), with bed and breakfast lodging being preferred in particular (92.8 per cent of the expenditures). The non-resident tourists’ expenditures in restaurants and bars represented 16.3 per cent, while expenditures on shopping represented 12 per cent. Of the total money spent on shopping, 34.9 per cent represented money spent on buying food and beverages, and 33.6 per cent represented money spent on buying presents and souvenirs (33.6 per cent). The money spent on renting auto vehicles represented 54.9 per cent of the total money spent on transportation, while the money spent on access to amusement parks, fairs, casinos and slot machine clubs represented 64.3 per cent of the total money spent for recreation.
The main means of transportation used by non-resident tourist in order to get to Romania was the airplane (77.4 per cent of the total number of tourists). Personal auto vehicles were used by 13.2 per cent of the total number of tourists, followed by motor coaches and buses (7.2 per cent), and other means of transportation (2.2 per cent).
