EU-Ukraine association agreement ratified by the two parliaments

The European Parliament ratified on Tuesday, simultaneously with the Parliament in Kiev, the Association Agreement between the European Union and Ukraine, AFP informs.
The agreement, whose adoption was deemed “historic” by European Parliament President, garnered 535 votes in favor, 127 against and 35 abstentions.
In its turn, the Ukrainian Parliament ratified the historic agreement on Tuesday, thus materializing this former Soviet republic’s distancing from Russia, AFP informs. The text was adopted with the votes of all 355 MPs, there being no votes against it. After voting the MPs sang the national anthem of Ukraine, then Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko (photo) signed the agreement, being applauded by the MPs present.
The association agreement, consisting of a political and an economic (free trade) part, nevertheless remains significantly symbolic at this stage, considering that the EU has announced the postponement of the coming into force of the free trade agreement until the end of 2015 in order to allow for talks with Russia, which opposes this part of the agreement.
