“I welcome the role Germany has played in the building and strengthening of the European project”

German Unity Day is not only one of the symbolic moments that marked the end of the Cold War. As a teenager watching the fall of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe, I remember witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of Germany with amazement and optimism.
It was a signal that the voice of the people cannot be ignored, in spite of the harsh realities of hatred, ideology or misguided politics! It was a forceful example of how people can make history in spite of their surrounding circumstances and about how a nation can make huge steps towards building a prosperous and democratic community.
Today, we look at the German example. In economic and in political accomplishments, I believe that Germany has set a truly remarkable example for the whole European continent and the force of this example needs to be taken into account by all the Central and Eastern European countries, which are trying to cope with the numerous challenges manifest in the European system: adapting to European integration, responding to the opportunities and risks posed by globalization, setting up just and at the same time well-performing economic systems.
I welcome the role Germany has played in the building and strengthening of the European project and I am assured that in a united Europe, itself a result of the thoughtful action of visionary German political leaders, Romania can look forwards to its future, alongside a prominent partner such as Germany.
As Prime Minister of Romania, I want to express my deep sentiments of friendship for the German people and to assure them that Romania remains a trustworthy friend and partner!
