Sibiu: “Dear Pyongyang” to open Astra Film Festival

The Japanese film “Dear Pyongyang”, depicting the effects of a dramatic experiment of extreme Communism, will open today the2014 edition of the Sibiu International Documentary Film Festival Astra. For the days to come, dozens of films will be presented in several halls of the city.
Astra Film Festival (AFF) will start on Monday, at 19.00, with the  Japanese film “Dear Pyongyang”, directed by Yang Yonghi, and will close on October 12.   “Dramas of recent history are reflected by personal and family dramas, revealing themselves in multiple and deep tones, by means of documentary cinema. The opening film, “Dear Pyongyang” is the story of an experiment performed in Japan and Korea. The film shows the effects of a terrible experiment of hardcore Communism, as it happened in the Far East and as it is so familiar, though, to us, who live in this region of Europe”, the press release shows.
The opening film will be screened in the presence of the director, who will also answer questions of the audience.
AFF has four competition sections, and the attendants to these sections will be evaluated by a jury that gathers nationally and internationally renowned names: Cristi Puiu, a Romanian director that won a Cannes award; Michael Stewart, the manager of Open City Doc Fest in London; Darya Bassel, program manager of the Documentary Film Festival for Human Rights in Kyiv; Sorin Botoseneanu, Dean of the Film Faculty at the National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest; Cynthia Close, film critic at Documentary Magazine in USA; Nicolas Feodoroff, film selector for the Documentary Film Festival in Marseille; Mona Nicoara, curator of the platform DAFilms; Eugenia Voda, film critic and Yang Yonghi, a Japanese director born in Korea.
Astra Film Festival 2014 is organized by Astra Film Studio and the Astra Film Foundation, and supported by the Sibiu County Council, The National Centre of Cinematography, the Ministry of Culture and the EU, by the program Creative Europe – Media.
