Romania exports in H1 almost 2.5 M tons of wheat and corn

The total 2014 grain harvest is very close to the one obtained last year – almost 20 M tons. Although the wheat production was slightly below the one of 2013, the one for corn is estimated to be higher. The good 2013 and 2014 production will also reflect on export activities. Statistical data indicates that Romania exported a total of 2.46 M tons of wheat and corn in H1 2014, more by 37 per cent than in the similar period of 2013, when the export was at 1.8 M tons.  Of the total quantity of grains sold on foreign markets (EU and third countries), the wheat accounted for 1.385 M tons and corn for 1.074 M tons, obtaining EUR 328.6 M from the export of corn and EUR 293.6 M from wheat.
MADR data shows that the total amount obtained from the export of wheat and corn exceeded EUR 622.2 M in January-June 2014, which represents almost one third (30 per cent) of the total amount obtained from agri-food export, which was EUR 2.030 bn in H1.
In the first half of 2013, the total amount obtained from the wheat and corn export was EUR 538.4 M.  According to MADR, the first three positions in the Romanian export in H1 2014 were filled by corn, cigars, cigarettes and wheat, bringing a total revenue of EUR 933 M, which represents almost half of the total amount obtained from export in H1.
In the first six months of 2014, the trade balance of agri-food produce of Romania recorded a deficit of EUR 295.3 M, compared to a deficit of EUR 450.59 M in the period of reference in 2013.
Whilst Romania exported in the first six months agri-food produce to intra and extra-community countries worth over EUR 2 bn, up by 10 per cent compared to H1 of 2013, the import only grew by 1.1 per cent to EUR 2.32 bn.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Daniel Constantin, informed on Saturday that Romania had a good chance of closing 2014 with a surplus of the trade balance of agri-food products as well, for the second consecutive year.
‘Last year, for the first time in 20 years, we managed to have a positive trade balance of agri-food products. We exported more than we imported for the first time after 20 years. It’s a positive aspect, but I am a realistic person and I am going to tell you there is also a not so good aspect: we export a lot of raw material. (…) In 2014 there is also the premise that exports could be higher than imports. In the first six months we continue to e the champions of corn export, but, again, it is raw material and not processed production. In the first six months we exported agri-food products worth EUR 200 M more than in the first six months of 2013, and production this year appears to be at least as good as in 2013’, Daniel Constantin said.
