Alro: We don’t see a too long future for aluminium industry in Romania

Alro Slatina incurred energy costs of USD 66 M in 2013 and the company cannot afford another year with so high expenses, Gheorghe Dobra, CEO Alro Slatina, said during a conference on energy. According to him, energy expenditures, including eco-fees, exceeded USD 1,000 per ton. The aluminium quotation on Thursday was USD 1,886/ton.  ‘The cost of energy has exceeded USD 1,000 per ton of aluminium. Under such conditions, we don’t see a very long future for the aluminium industry in Romania’, Dobra noted.  According to him, Alro last year paid USD 66M on energy, including the eco-fees.  The company official also said that the deadline by which major energy consumers may submit the documentation necessary for obtaining an excemption from the payment of part of the green certificates has been postponed until 1st December.  ‘We are afraid that it may be delayed until next year, because we cannot afford another year with such costs’, Dobra also said.  He pointed out that Alro invested USD 500 M in the last ten years, USD 100 M of which in curbing energy consumption and environment protection.
