Beekeepers protest outside Agriculture Ministry

Dozens of beekeepers, members of the ROMAPIS Federation of Beekeeping Associations, protested on Thursday outside the Agriculture Ministry building against the authorization, through a waiver from European norms, of the use of pesticides that present high-risk for bees. ROMAPIS President Mircea Ciocan considers that such waivers are abusive not just towards beekeeping but also towards the environment and human health.
The European Commission has banned in the EU the use of 3 pesticides used for some crops because they risk affecting the bees. The ban was canceled in Romania through a decision taken by the Agriculture Ministry, which issued two successive waivers from these stipulations, under pressure from farmers’ associations.
The pesticides, members of the class called neonicotinoides, have negative effects on bees, causing acute and chronic poisoning.
