Basescu criticises Cristian Preda, Alina Mungiu for being after eligible positions for EP

During the ‘jocuri de putere’ Realitatea TV show Monday night, President Traian Basescu did not miss the opportunity to also criticise the intellectuals who once supported him but who have lately taken distance from the head of state, denouncing his actions. Traian Basescu blamed Cristian Preda and Alina Mungiu Pippidi for being after eligible positions in the election for the European Parliament and said that ‘where there is knowledge there isn’t always also character’.
‘I have seen this campaign conducted by some right-wing journalists I am labelling just as deceitful as Ponta’s crew from Antena 3 TV, right-wing journalists who have come to the conclusion that I have a deal with Ponta. That’s an ordinary lie. People who supported me. Except Alina Mungiu Pippidi whom I crossed out from the list of candidates in the 2009 European Parliament election. What Cristi Preda said in his statement ‘I used PMP to go into the European Parliament’ disgusted me deeply. That was a mistake I am going to take responsibility for. Where there is knowledge there isn’t always also character, the president expressed his indignation. He also pointed out that Pippidi came ‘in the communist style’, went to the Iasi organisation to give her their vote to be put in an eligible position for the European election and, since that time, she has turned into an unappeased enemy’. ‘She wanted a seat in the European Parliament like the other intellectuals’, Basescu also said.
