Cluj: Avram Iancu Airport prepares to operate flights to New York

The director of the Avram Iancu International Airport Cluj (central Romania), David Ciceo, on Tuesday told a press conference, that after the finalisation of the 3.5 km runway, the airport will be prepared to operate also intercontinental flights, New York included.
‘This year we are reaching closer to a traffic of 1.2 million passengers on the Avram Iancu International Airport, due to the new airlines that have been choosing us and to the new 2100-meter runway, the first stage of the 3500 meter runway. We are continuing the extension of the runway until 3500 m, and after the finalisation of this project we will have flights from Cluj-Napoca to New York, there is potential in this sense and we estimate that in 7-8 years the first such flights may be operated’ stated, on Tuesday, in a press conference, David Ciceo.
He also said that beginning with next year flights to the capital of Sweden, Stockholm, will be operated.
The first segment, 2100-meter long, of the Cluj airport runway was inaugurated in October 2013, following to be extended to 3500 meters. The total value of the project is worth around 78 million euro.
