Macovei: “Money exists in Romania, just need to be redirected from underground economy”

Independent candidate for President Monica Macovei on Tuesday told a press conference in Iasi that money exists in Romania for health care, education and infrastructure, but must be recovered from underground economy and directed to the state budget.
“There is money for health care, education, streets, highways, for everything we need. This is obvious if we just take the latest cases [under investigation]: Lukoil – with 230 ml euros in tax evasion and money laundering; the illegal property returns and the Microsoft case which clearly show that cross-party crime permeates our entire political life and where the damage caused by tax evasion, money laundering and other frauds is worth a total of 650 ml euros. These amounts must be recovered and directed to the state budget. There is money in Romania. All we need is to stop this large-scale larceny for us to be able to recover it,” said Macovei.
The PDL MEP criticized the cumbersome recovery of the siphoned off amounts, mentioning as an argument the fact that in the first half of 2014 the National Tax Administration Agency (ANAF) recovered only 5 percent of the amounts ordered through final court decisions, while the recovery share in 2013 was 2 percent.
“This is very little. This money does not return to the state budget because ANAF doesn’t do its job properly. The public institutions must be depoliticized. According to WB assessments, tax evasion stood at 50 billion euros two years ago,” Macovei said.
