BMI: IT market to grow by 9.1 pc this year

The Romanian IT market will grow by 9.1 per cent to RON 5.4 bln this year, representing the highest growth among most regional countries, this development being backed by the strong economic growth and Romania’s status of regional center for IT professionals, according to Business Monitor International (BMI).
“On the medium term, the growth of salaries will support the development of the retail market for hardware components, while the modernization of the telecommunications infrastructure is forecast to speed-up Romania’s process of positioning itself as an important market for outsourcing and cloud computing,” a quarterly report authored by the market research company shows.
Nevertheless, the region’s economic and political instability could negatively affect the market’s evolution, according to the report.
BMI estimates that the sales of hardware components will grow to RON 2.9 bln this year, up from RON 2.8 bln last year, being backed by the recovery of the PCs and notebooks market, but also by a significant growth in the sales of tablets.
The software market is forecast to grow to RON 1.2 bln, compared to sales of RON 1.1 bln last year.
The growth rhythm continues to be affected by the high level of piracy, but expenditures on software solutions are estimated to grow against the backdrop of the switch to new operating system versions as a result of Microsoft’s decision to withdraw its support for Windows XP, a decision taken in April, the BMI report shows.
