The Constanta Court rejected yesterday the request filed by Mircea Basescu, the President’s brother, to have the preventive arrest measure replaced with home arrest. The Constanta Court magistrates analyzed on Monday the legality of the measure to place Mircea Basescu and Marian Capatana under preventive arrest. The two are defendants in a case concerning alleged bribery received from the family of Sandu Anghel, also known as Bercea Mondial.
At the same time, the lawyers of the two defendants had requested the cancellation of the preventive arrest measure and its replacement with house arrest, Mediafax informs.
The court noted the legal character and soundness of the preventive arrest measure and rejected the lawyers’ requests as baseless, so that Mircea Basescu and Marian Capatana will remain under preventive arrest. The decision taken by the Constanta Court is not final and can be attacked within 48 hours at the Constanta Court of Appeals.
Mircea Basescu and Marian Capatana were placed under preventive arrest on June 20, after Sandu Anghel’s family made public recordings made by his son, recordings that allegedly prove the influence peddling the President’s brother is charged with.
