Traian Basescu, last anniversary at Cotroceni

Traian Basescu celebrated yesterday his last birthday as President of Romania, as his second and last term expires this year. Basescu, who celebrated his 63rd birthday with the family, posted a photograph to his Facebook page showing him with his wife, Maria, and their granddaughter Sofia Anais, near a cake in the shape of a ship decorated with Popeye the Sailor and Olive and with the inscription ‘Happy Birthday, Grandpa!’
The cake has the shape of the ‘Biruinta’ ship the president used to sail when he was a sea captain.
The two daughters of the presidential couple – Elena and Ioana, both pregnant – are not in the family picture.
With one exception – last year, when he celebrated his birthday at the official mansion with his family, including his granddaughter Sofia Anais, at the time just a couple of months old, the president has always spent it in various locations with close politicians.
Wishes with innuendo from rivals
Asked what was his wish to the president on his birthday, Victor Ponta said he should be happy that, after two years – the time since the 2012 referendum – Romania will, at last, have a president. ‘After the 17th we will have a president of Romania and he, as a citizen, should be happy that, after two years, we will have a president at last’, Ponta said.
PSD Executive President Liviu Dragnea in turn said his wish to Basescu was what Basescu wished him on his birthday. ‘I wish him what he wished me on my birthday, on 28 October, in all sincerity’, Dragnea said. Asked to specify what the wish was, Dragnea noted: ‘I don’t know, I expect he wished me <Happy Birthday!>. If that’s true, I wish him the same, nothing less’.
