Nicusor Constantinescu arrested in Turkey

The suspended President of Constanta County Council, Nicusor Constantinescu, has been taken into custody by Istanbul authorities after the Ministry of Justice had sent the documents for bringing him back to the country to be remanded in custody in the cases in which he is on trial. N. Constantinescu was arrested on Tuesday at a police station in Istanbul and was going to be arraigned before a court to have his international pursuit warrant confirmed, following the arrest decision passed by the Bucharest Tribunal. According to his lawyer, Nicusor Constantinescu told the Turkish judges that he would voluntarily return to Romania. The Court did not order him arrested and he will catch a flight to Romania.
Last week, the Ministry of Justice sent to the Turkish authorities the necessary documents for bringing back into the country N. Constantinescu who has been brought to justice in several cases.
Before reaching Turkey, N. Constantinescu had been in the US. The request for his extradition was declined by the US authorities, according to Mediafax.
Constantinescu was referred to court by the anti-corruption prosecutors in three different criminal cases.
