Anghel Iordanescu begins his new term as coach of Romania’s national soccer team on Friday, on the game with Northern Ireland in the preliminaries of the 2016 European Championship. He sees this match as ‘the most important this year’ for the tricolours, who stand a chance to become leaders of their qualification group if they win. ‘I took over the national team in a difficult moment. I take this opportunity to thank [former coach] Victor Piturca for everything he did at the national team, for his results, and especially I can say that I personally regret his departure. It’s a special situation, considering I am taking over the national team with many, many problems, especially health condition problems,’ Iordanescu said on Monday in a press conference at the National Football Centre in Mogosoaia (near Bucharest). The new coach disclosed his intention of refraining from ‘major changes’ to the team for the time being; he nevertheless considered some future adjustments.
