The Hungarian Democrat Union of Romania (UDMR) chair, Kelemen Hunor announced his formation will leave the government. Decision was made in northwestern city of Cluj-Napoca, by the UDMR Standing Council after more than five hours of debates.
The Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) met on Thursday in order to decide whether to remain in the Government or not. UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor had recently declared that an analysis would be made shortly and if “the Government is not supporting people”, it is useless for UDMR to remain in the coalition. UDMR leaders admitted that there were two groups inside the party concerning the topic of staying in the coalition or not.
The General Secretary of UDMR, Kovacs Peter, declared on Wednesday that the decision would be reached by the Permanent Council of the Party. “The Permanent Council will have a meeting, we will analyse the results of the elections and decide where to continue governing or not”, Kovacs Peter explained
He refused to make any comments regarding the present tendencies inside UDMR, regarding the matter of governing.
“I do not like sending messages in the media to my colleagues, as some of my fellow politicians did. We will make the analysis tomorrow and reach a decision”, Kovacs Peter declared.
UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor had declared over the last few days that “If the government is not supporting people or communities, it is useless for us to stay in a Government that fails to benefit people. On Thursday, we will have a meeting of the permanent Committee, where we will analyse the results of elections and, obviously, reach a decision on what we should do in the near future. The government was not a purpose in itself neither for us as a party, nor for me; it was more of a possibility, an instrument required in order to put a political project or part of a political project into practice. (…) In an electoral year, being in the Government is far from being brilliant, neither for us and nor for others. Therefore, we will perform an analysis and if the government ignores people and communities, our staying inside the government is futile. You must have the possibility to provide benefits to people”, the UDMR leader pointed out.
The president of the Union Representatives Council (CRU) of the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania, Senator Biro Rozalia, declared on Wednesday that the crushing majority of this party supported the idea of UDMR remaining at the government.
“I will present you this situation on Thursday. There are two groups, a small one and one including the majority of UDMR, that presents that this governing must be continued under the circumstances of a thoroughly detailed discussion with our coalition partners, if he reach the conclusion that they would assume acting according to the priorities we established in March and that were not fulfilled so far”, the CRU president said.
The political Vice-president Laszlo Borbely pointed out as well that the Permanent Council meeting would include an analysis of the achievements and failures of the government tradition; yet, the decision regarding a possible quitting of the Government would only be taken after a comprehensive and attentive debate.
