George Lowendal Exhibition at MNTR

The “Tancred Banateanu” Hall of the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant (MNTR) will host, until January 8, 2015, the exhibition “George Lowendal: My encounters with peasants”.

“The exhibition presents a gallery of portraits that has no comparison in modern Romanian painting”.

Created during three centuries (1933 – 1963), these “faces” of peasants – men and women – are accompanied for the first time by excerpts from the artist’s notes that were never published before.

Acknowledged and consecrated as a “painter of peasants”, George Lowendal (1897-1964) knowingly assumed the task of registering, in his paintings, excerpts of an ancient history, that might be easily lost in the dawning of modern times”, the curator of the exhibition, University professor Dr. Ruxandra Demetrescu outlined.
