Foreign Affairs Minister Bogdan Aurescu on Sunday during a meeting with a U.S. House of Representatives visiting delegation led by Congressman Mike Rogers (photo R) , chairman of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee, stressed Romania’s interest in deepening the Strategic Partnership with the United States, also noting that Romania and the U.S. will celebrate 135 years of diplomatic relations next year. According to a press release of the Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE), the members of the U.S. Congress voiced appreciation for the Strategic Partnership signed with Romania, and for Romania’s capacity as United States’ friend and staunch ally in the region. Bogdan Aurescu brought to the fore the operationalization next year of the anti-missile facility hosted by the Deveselu Romanian base, one of the most important common projects of the politico-military dimension of the Romania-US Strategic Partnership.
“Once the facility becomes operational, it will enhance the protection of territories, populations and allied forces in Europe against possible missile attacks from outside the Euro-Atlantic space, being a purely defensive project, which will be integrated into the NATO missile defense system and which it is not directed at Russia in any way, as it is otherwise laid down in the documents adopted at the NATO Summit in Great Britain,” the release reads. Aurescu pointed out that Romania will increase cooperation with the U.S. in 2015 in order to implement the partner initiative at the Black Sea for training and exercises with Romania’s and Bulgaria’s Navies, announced by U.S. President Barack Obama at the NATO Summit in the UK.
In this regard, Aurescu called on the U.S. congressmen to visibly and firmly support the European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia. The Romanian minister also requested the U.S. Congress representatives to support Romania’s entry in the Visa Waiver programme. According to MAE, Aurescu stressed that Romania hails the extension of negotiations in the “5 + 1” format with Iran, voicing hope in the constructive commitment of this state to finding a comprehensive solution to Iran’s nuclear file.
The members of the U.S. Congress delegation expressed their support for the objectives presented by the Romanian side and thanked for Romania’s significant contribution in terms of regional, Euro-Atlantic and global security, also praising the Romanian authorities for the excellent bilateral cooperation within the joint projects at the Deveselu and Mihail Kogalniceanu military bases.
