Achievements and new projects for Bucharest subway

Metrorex officials have announced the completion dates for the line that links Drumul Taberei and Pantelimon neighborhoods and the mainline that links Gara de Nord train station and Otopeni Airport.

Moreover, the company plans to extend Mainline 2 Pipera – IMGB and to build a new line that would link the city of Voluntari with the Bragadiru commune.

In what concerns the subway line in Drumul Taberei neighborhood, the completion date for the Eroilor – Raul Doamnei segment is the second half of 2016. The Iancului – Pantelimon section should be ready by 2018, Catalin Homor, Metrorex’s director of investments, stated for ‘Ziarul Financiar’ daily.

“The Pantelimon – Drumul Taberei line is divided into three sections. Section 1 (Eroilor – Raul Doamnei) is under construction and we have a realistic deadline. Next year “the moles” will reach the end and will be brought back to the Military Academy from where they will leave on the section toward Eroilor,” he explained.

The Eroilor – Raul Doamnei section is 6 kilometers long and has ten stations, Metrorex estimating that it will take 15 minutes for the trains to go through it. The flow of passengers is expected to be 70-80,000 per day at first.

Mainline 6 could be ready by 2020

For the time being the road leading from Bucharest to the Henri Coanda Airport is fairly arduous, most of the passengers having to choose between only two options: car or bus.

Thus, Mainline 6 Gara de Nord – Otopeni is the solution, a project worth EUR 1 bln, VAT not included, as pointed out by Metrorex director Aurel Radu.

He added that depending on the budget allocated for the project, construction works could start at the end of 2015, in which case the subway line would become operational in 2020.

Voluntari – Bragadiru line

Likewise, authorities plan to build Mainline 7 (Bragadiru – Voluntari) and to extended Mainline 2 (Pipera – IMGB) by another two stations, Metropotam informs.

Mainline 7 would cost over EUR 3 bln, according to a project that Metrorex and the Transport Ministry has forwarded to the European Commission along with other 200 plans for financing.

This section would have 30 stations and a length of 25 kilometers. The mainline would also go through the Rahova, Ferentari and Colentina neighborhoods.

Metrorex has also asked for European funds to extend Mainline Pipera – IMGB by another two stations that would total 1.6 kilometers. The two projects would be completed by 2020.
