Newly elected chairperson of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Alina Gorghiu said that on Thursday she conveyed to the Liberals a message of unity, stating that the party will open up and accept any valuable resource. ‘The message I conveyed to my colleagues who today had the resolve and confidence to give me their vote was one of party unity, which has lately experienced some glitches. I hope I perceived the messages of my party fellows correctly and I am happy to see that they converge with the will of those who turned out to vote on November 16. There are messages that evoke an internal reform of PNL and of the fundamental institutions of the state, increasing parliamentary credibility that can be achieved through PNL’s approaches, restoring the credibility of our party but not only,’ Gorghiu said after the after meeting of the Liberal leadership where she was elected to replace Klaus Iohannis at the helm of the party. She thanked the Liberals who ‘today realized something the population has understood since long, namely that PNL is a great party, which was compelled by the vote on November 16 to head for the direction the Romanian electorate requires it to.’ Gorghiu praised the elegance of her competition for the PNL leadership and congratulated Ludovic Orban for the way he chose to refer to the position of chairman of the old PNL. In addition, Gorghiu said that PNL’s political adversary is the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and that the Liberals will devise a strategy to address this state of play.

PNL’s co-chair Vasile Blaga stated on Thursday that he hails Alina Gorghiu’s election and that he is convinced that together will succeed to reach “the major objective to unify the Right into a single political force”. “I hail Mrs. Alina Gorghiu’s election. Liberals’ first deputy chairperson Alina Gorghiu on Thursday was elected chairperson of the old PNL, replacing Klaus Iohannis, and is also going to be co-chair of the new PNL.
