Eastern and southeastern Romania under Code Red and Code Orange warnings of heavy snows

The National Meteorology Administration (ANM) on Monday morning issued a Code Red warning of snowfalls for the eastern counties of Buzau, Vrancea and west of Braila county, to be valid until 13:00 hours.

According to forecasters, in the said areas the wind will blow strongly up to 85 – 90 km/h, will be heavy snowfalls and blizzard, while visibility will be cut to zero.

The National Weather Forecaster on Monday also  issued a Code Orange warning of snowfalls and heavy snows for nine counties of south and southeastern Romania (Muntenia and Moldavia), valid until Monday at 18:00 hours.

According to forecasters, between 6:00 and 18:00, in the counties of Buzau, Braila, Ialomita, Vrancea, Galati, Vaslui, Bacau (all in Moldavia), in the mountain area of the southern county of Prahova and in extreme eastern Tulcea county, snowfalls will exceed locally 25 – 30 litres per square metre, and the wind will blow with over 70 – 80 km/h, with drifted snow and visibility below 50 metres.

Likewise, in the same interval, 16 counties of eastern Moldavia and southern Muntenia, Bucharest included, will be under Code Yellow of snowfalls. The meteorological warning for Code Yellow is targeting the counties of Constanta, Calarasi, Giurgiu, Ilfov, Dambovita, Brasov, Covasna, Harghita (all central), Neamt, Iasi, Botosani, Suceava (northeastern) and certain areas of Prahova, Maramures (northern), Bistrita-Nasaud and Mures (central).

According to ANM, most part of Muntenia and the Curvature Carpathians and east of the Southern Carpathians will snow in blizzards. In southeastern Dobrogea, precipitations will be mixed in the first hours of the interval and isolated will be ice, then it will transform in snow. Wind in these regions will exceed 55 – 65 km/h, informs Agerpres.


Bus from the Republic of Moldova with 31 passengers  has side-slipped in Buzau county, no victims reported


A coach from the Republic of Moldova, carrying 31 passengers has side-slipped early on Monday on DN2 national road between the Limpezis and Mihailesti towns, Buzau county (north-east of Bucharest).
“The bus was heading to Bucharest, it has side-slipped on the right side of the road. There are no victims, but the passengers are trapped inside and they are to be pulled out through the roof catch,” Buzau Prefect’s Office spokesman Calin Iosif told Agerpres around 7 a.m..
As early as the beginning of the night, several county roads in Buzau were closed preventively, and restrictions for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes were imposed on two other national roads.
“In the southern area of Buzau county there are heavy snowfalls, and the wind is drifting the snow,” Calin Iosif also said.
