PNL Senator Tudor Chiuariu is under criminal investigation by the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) prosecutors for influence peddling, money laundering and joining an organised criminal group in connection to the attribution of some large forest field areas in which former social-democrat senator Viorel Hrebenciuc is in preventive arrest.
According to a release by DNA on Saturday, the Brasov anti-corruption prosecutors have disposed a 30-day judicial control period as against Tudor Chiuariu. “The defendant Chiuariu was drawn attention to, that in case of breach in bad faith of his incumbent obligations, the measure of judicial control could turn into home arrest or preventive arrest,” the DNA says.
Viorel Hrebenciuc was arrested on October 29, based on charges of founding an organised criminal group, influence trafficking and peddling, money laundering, using influence in order to gain undeserved benefit and instigation to abuse of influence by a person leading a party in order to gain undeserved benefit for himself or for others.
According to DNA, starting on April 2013, Viorel Hrebenciuc, in partnership with Deputy Ioan Adam, Paltin Sturdza and Dan Bengescu, founded and coordinated a group destined to gain benefits by bribe-giving, purchase or illegal use of influence in order to accelerate overtaking possessions and issuing property titles, as well as a fast sale of a forestry lot of 43,227 hectares gained due to a decision issued by the Covasna County Court
Tudor Chiuariu, previously convicted
This is not the first file against the Liberal Senator. Last January, former Justice Minister Tudor Chiuariu was sentenced to three years and six months of suspended prison while former Telecommunications Minister Zsolt Nagy was convicted to four years of prison in the Romanian Post case that included charges of abuse of office and causing the state a prejudice of over EUR 8 million against the two politicians.
DNA prosecutors have pointed out that the two Ministers have approved, by Government decree, the transfer of a building located in central Bucharest from the property of the Romanian Post to private property, by fake documents and at a price EUR 3.6 million lower than the real one. The estimated prejudice in this case is EUR 8,619,787, representing the market price of the property.
Ultimatum from Chiuariu to resign from PNL
The Liberal leader Alina Gorghiu gave a ultimatum to Senator Chiuariu to resign from PNL, until January 23, when the party will hold its first meeting in 2015 , otherwise, she will require his exclusion from the party, party sources said.
