National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) prosecutors in Brasov have expanded their prosecution against Senator Tudor Chiuariu, suspended from PNL, because of another influence peddling crime, the Senator having allegedly asked to be paid a EUR 3 M bribe.
Tudor Chiuariu is investigated by prosecutors subject to legal restrictions pending trial, being accused of influence peddling and money laundering, but he can be placed under preventive arrest if he fails to respect the legal restrictions placed by prosecutors. On Saturday he was heard at DNA Brasov in the illegal restitutions case in which Viorel Hrebenciuc was arrested.
At first it was said that he allegedly asked Paltin Sturza and Viorel Hrebenciuc for a EUR 2.5 M bribe disguised as a lawyer’s fee, in exchange for influencing the prefect of Bacau County. However, according to new information, the bribe paid for the restitution of a large surface of forest to Gheorghe Paltin Sturdza appears to have totaled EUR 3 M. “During this meeting, after Tudor Chiuariu assured Gheorghe Paltin Sturdza of his influence over civil servants in Bacau County, (…) he asked him for the sum of EUR 3 M in exchange for obtaining, with the help of his influence over the said civil servants, the restitution of a plot of land of approximately 6,000 hectares of forest,” the DNA communiqué reads.
This is not the first case in which Tudor Chiuariu is involved. In January last year the former Justice Minister was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in jail, suspended sentence, in the Romanian Post case in which he was accused of malfeasance in office and of causing damages of over EUR 8 M to the state. The Senator has suspended his PNL membership.
